The Issue

If you are here, you are probably getting the error Unknown collation: 'utf8mb4_unicode_ci' when trying to import a database. We will not get into the technical explanation of why this happens, we’ll focus on the solution instead.

The Solution

Forget about the old export file. Create a new one and follow the steps:

  • Choose Custom from Export Method.
  • Scroll down to Format Specific Options and select MYSQL40 at Database system or older MYSQL server to maximize output compatibility
  • Scroll at the bottom, click Go
  • Done!

Now you can import the new generated file. Did this solution work for you? Please let others know by leaving comments below!
