Cyber Monday is the online equivalent of Black Friday, celebrated on the Monday after the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States. Cyber Monday is often perceived as Black Friday’s less-interesting sibling, but that’s unfair, as the deals from online vendors are as generous as the Black Friday ones. In fact, many online stores offer the same deal between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, so it’s rather the “Black Friday Weekend” or “Cyber Monday Weekend”.
Cyber Monday term was first introduced in e-commerce in 2005, by Ellen Davis, Senior Vice President of the National Retail Federation. The head of Shop.org, Scott Silverman says the term was invented after 2004 when a research concluded that “one of the biggest online shopping days of the year” was the Monday after Thanksgiving. The New York Times quote:
“The name Cyber Monday grew out of the observation that millions of otherwise productive working Americans, fresh off a Thanksgiving weekend of window shopping, were returning to high-speed Internet connections at work Monday and buying what they liked.“
Sure, this quote brings a smile now but back then people had really slow Internet connections at home.
This is how Cyber Monday has become an global marketing term used by online retailers across the world wide web.
